Competitive Energy Insight, Inc. (CEI) has developed a suite of mature and highly advanced software products for the analysis of investments in independent power, public or private utility, renewable energy, fossil, combined heat and power and commodity product applications. We both license these models for your direct use, and use them broadly in our project development consulting practice serving as a bench to support your in-house team. All of the EconExpertTM tools are Excel-based, making them completely customizable, auditable and adding all of the features of Excel to EconExpert’s powerful automated architecture. Importantly, EconExpert is far more than a spreadsheet. Behind each EconExpert model is powerful Visual Basic programming which provides highly advanced menu driven functionality that takes Excel and your analysis capability to a completely new level. Standardized, accurate and applicable to bank-quality analysis of virtually any project investment, acquisition or divestiture, EconExpert has been applied to literally billions of dollars of energy project investments including renewable energy projects, multi-hundred million dollar central power station investments and on-site generation applications, providing advanced business functionality, productivity and cost savings to our client network of hundreds of users.

The Models

The schematic below diagrams our modeling suite.  Following the schematic is an overview description of each of our products, which are further described in other links on this website.


 

CEI’s EconExpert modeling suite includes:  

1. EconExpert-EP (Electric Power).  An economic and financial analysis tool for wholesale thermal power plants including solar thermal, biofuel, landfill gas, fossil and other thermal-based electric power projects.   Wholesale projects sell energy to the grid (“over-the-fence”) to third parties using bilateral contracts like power purchase agreements (PPAs) as well as other market- based or regulated (investor owned or public utility) mechanisms. 

2. EconExpert-WIND. An economic and financial analysis tool for wind farm projects that sell wholesale energy.  Derived from EconExpert-EP, EconExpert-WIND is tailored for wind farm applications and is perfectly suited to perform competitive project and market evaluation of wind applications that can utilize Production Tax Credits, Renewable Energy Credits and often apply complex partnering and financing arrangements. Features include analysis of wind production profiles, full Monte Carlo wind profile simulations, sophisticated sensitivity analyses, full leveraged and unleveraged analysis and partnership structuring. 

3. EconExpert-PV. An economic and financial analysis tool for wholesale solar Photovoltaic projects.  Tailored specifically for PV, and with the same features and functionality as EconExpert-EP and EconExpert-WIND, EconExpert-PV  is perfectly suited to perform competitive project and market evaluation of projects that can utilize Investment Tax Credits, Renewable Energy Credits and often apply complex partnering and financing arrangements. 

4. EconExpert-DG for CHP (Distributed Generation). An economic and financial analysis tool for distributed generation / behind-the-meter applications.  These typically involve combined heat and power, electric utility tariff analysis and energy savings applications where the economic scenario is driven by savings that a host can achieve through the on-site generation of power as opposed to purchasing power from the utility.  EconExpert-DG is perfectly suited to perform competitive project and market evaluation of projects that represent make/buy analyses where the motive is to produce savings for the host through on-site production of power is to offset purchases from the host utility and where appropriate to sell excess production back to the grid. 

5. EconExpert-DG for PV (Distributed Generation).  Derived from EconExpert-DG for CHP, EconExpert-DG for PV is specifically tailored for photovoltaic applications for PV distributed generation / behind-the-meter applications.  These typically involve applications like rooftop-PV where it is necessary to understand electric utility tariffs and the economics of self-generation.  EconExpert-DG for PV is perfectly suited to perform competitive project and market evaluation of projects that represent make/buy analyses where the motive is to produce savings for the host through on-site production of power is to offset purchases from the host utility and where appropriate to sell excess production back to the grid.

6. EconExpert-CP (Commodity Products). An economic and financial analysis tool for transportation fuels applications including ethanol, biodiesel, and for other commodity product manufacturing facilities such as synthetic natural gas, hydrogen, coal gasification and refining applications.  EconExpert-CP includes all of the features and functionality of our other financial models, based on scenario of production of individual or multiple commodities from a single or multiple feed stocks.

7. EconExpert-IAT (Interval Analysis Tools for WIND, PV and CHP).  the EconExpert-IAT models each simulate the time-of-production sales of energy as a function of interval energy prices, demand/load profiles, hourly ambient weather conditions and facility operating characteristics.  For PV and CHP applications, these tools provide hour by hour simulation of the dynamic operations of an on-site generation facility with varying production capability serving a site hose with varying energy demands under a scenario of time-dependent energy value.  EconExpert-PV can also incorporate the EconExpert-EnergyShape Database of proxy building thermal and electric profile data that allows the simulation of time-of-use energy and thermal profiles for virtually any building type or configuration when specific metering data is not available.

8. EconExpert-MAESTRO Electronic Databook.   This is a unique and highly automated master controller for our models.  The EconExpert-MAESTRO Electronic Databook supports the integrated analysis of multiple scenarios tied to a single or multiple EconExpert spreadsheets.  With this tool users can easily manage multiple cases and can perform advanced tasks like automated comparisons of results and aggregation of projects (portfolio analysis) into consolidated income statements and balance sheets.  All of these EconExpert models feature complete flexibility to model any transaction from the perspective of any stakeholder in the transaction, complemented by techniques to model alternative debt/equity structures, partnerships, leases, custom contracts and virtually all other project / business models.

Other features common to the entire suite of EconExpert tools include:

  • Standardization. All of your financial analysis work can be performed in a consistent, understandable and reproducible platform. You will no longer need to worry about the “Legacy Effect” which can result in changes to one project model getting accidentally carried forward into other analyses. With EconExpert, all of your customized analyses are driven though straight forward input sheets.

  • Completely Auditable.  EconExpert includes a common sense formula auditing tool that makes it easy for you to track, trace and understand every calculation in the model.

  • Applicable Over the Full Business Cycle. The models are easily adapted to everything from quick screening to detailed transaction modeling in “bank-quality” format.

  • Wizard and Menu Driven. The EconExpert models are equipped with menus and wizards that assist the user in setting up analyses and providing clear reports.

  • Automated Sensitivities. Included in each model is a suite of automated sensitivity analyses ranging from investment, operations and financing analyses, to asset valuation, forward electric and gas prices, fuel hedging, and contract mechanism risk analyses, allowing the user to gain a thorough understanding of a project's risk profile and to properly structure win-win agreements to manage those risks. Automated case comparison can be used to provide a clear understanding of how multiple changes in costs, performance or deal structure will specifically impact project economics.

  • Presentation Quality Graphics. These support the simple communication of results to your peers, your management, your partners and your customers.
